Grandelo: A Display Font That Elevates Small Business Branding

Refreshing a Café Menu with a Touch of Whimsy

Recently, I helped a local café update their menu design in preparation for a seasonal refresh. The owner wanted something that felt more inviting and consistent with their warm, playful atmosphere. After reviewing a few options, we landed on Grandelo, a retro-styled display font that brought a sense of charm and personality to the printed menu and digital banners.

Grandelo isn’t just another font—it’s a design element in itself. With its cool, whimsical character and a hint of vintage flair, it immediately adds visual interest without overwhelming the reader. It’s the kind of font that makes people pause and notice your brand, whether it's on a printed menu, a product label, or an Instagram story.

Why Typography Matters for Brand Perception

Typography plays a quiet but powerful role in how customers perceive your business. A well-chosen font can make your brand feel more polished, trustworthy, and memorable—even before a customer reads a single word.

In the case of Grandelo, its retro design gives off a sense of nostalgia and creativity, making it ideal for small businesses that want to stand out with a unique personality. It’s a display font at heart, meaning it shines brightest in headlines, logos, and short phrases rather than long paragraphs. When used correctly, it can elevate your brand identity without sacrificing readability.

Real-World Uses for Grandelo in Business Materials

One of the things I appreciate most about Grandelo is its versatility across different mediums. It worked beautifully on the café’s printed menu, but we also used it for:

Because Grandelo is PUA encoded, accessing all the glyphs and swashes was seamless, even for someone without advanced design software. This made it easy to add decorative elements to the café’s logo and special edition menu items without extra setup time.

Pairing Grandelo with Supporting Fonts

While Grandelo is perfect for headlines and logos, it’s best paired with a clean, legible font for body text. In the café project, we combined it with a soft sans serif for menu descriptions and pricing. This contrast created a balanced visual hierarchy—Grandelo grabbed attention, while the supporting font kept the information easy to digest.

For other small businesses, pairing Grandelo with a script font can enhance its playful nature, especially for boutique tags or handmade product packaging. Alternatively, a modern serif font can lend a touch of elegance when used for a skincare brand or artisanal candle labels.

Readability and Practical Design Tips

It’s important to remember that while Grandelo has a strong visual presence, it works best in larger sizes. For small product labels or mobile screens, I recommend using it sparingly—perhaps just for the brand name or a key feature.

When designing for print, always test the font at actual size to ensure legibility. For digital use, consider how it appears on thumbnails or low-resolution screens. Grandelo’s retro design holds up well, but clarity should never be compromised, especially when customers are scanning your content quickly.

What to Check Before Using Grandelo Commercially

Before incorporating Grandelo into any customer-facing material, it's wise to verify the font’s licensing terms. Since this is a premium display font, make sure it includes commercial use permissions, especially if you're applying it to physical products, packaging, or digital templates you plan to sell.

Also, check what file formats and alternate styles are included. Grandelo’s PUA encoding is a major plus, but having access to multiple weights and ligatures can expand your design flexibility. Multilingual support is another consideration if your brand communicates in more than one language.
